Cap and Reduce Greenhouse Gas Pollution - Yes on SB 80

This legislation will require that Oregon agencies responsible for regulating utilities, major polluters and transportation develop comprehensive plans and regulations to meet Oregon's greenhouse gas reduction goals of 10% reductions below 1990 levels by 2020. It will stimulate investments in energy efficiency, renewable energy and put pressure on utilities to phase out coal plants. This is the most important climate protection legislation of the session.

No fast-tracking LNG pipelines - No on HB 3058

This legislation would allow LNG companies to apply for permits from the state for wetland fill removal before they have landowner permission in order to help fast-track LNG pipeline development.

Protect our State Forests - No on HB 3072

This legislation would define the 'greatest permanent value' on Oregon's state forests and require them to be managed 'primarily for timber production.' This extreme change in management will leave behind thousands of acres of clearcuts and damaged water quality, while causing harm to world-class salmon fisheries, and reducing recreation opportunities on our state lands.

Yes to Low Carbon Fuel - Yes on HB 2186

This legislation would establish a 'low carbon fuel standard' in Oregon that will lead to greater fuel efficiency, cleaner fuels for cars and trucks, and more cleaner alternative vehicles in Oregon. By passing this bill we can protect the climate while helping save consumers from paying outrageous sums of money at the pump.

Take Action to Stop Global Warming!

This year, the Oregon Legislature has an opportunity to rebuild Oregon’s economy by passing legislation to combat global climate change. By investing in energy efficiency and capping and reducing greenhouse gas pollution, we can create thousands of green jobs across Oregon and save consumers and businesses on their energy and fuel bills.

You can help the Sierra Club pass legislation that would:

  • Increase investments in energy efficiency in our homes, businesses, and transportation options
  • Implement strong caps on greenhouse gas pollution.
  • Stop new coal fired power plants from being built in Oregon.
  • Develop affordable, clean sources of energy.

Please email your state legislators today and ask them to support Senate Bill 80 and House Bill 2186.

Senate Bill 80, currently in the Senate Environment and Natural Resources Committee, would allow the state to establish a cap on greenhouse gas emissions, and a system for trading or auctioning a limited number of greenhouse gas credits. Such a system will provide a financial incentive for companies that reduce their pollution. The cap would be gradually lowered over time, making businesses that innovate, invest in energy efficiency, and burn less fossil fuels more competitive.

House Bill 2186, currently in the House Environment and Water Committee, would lead to cleaner burning fuels, more fuel efficiency, and encourage low and zero emissions vehicles.

By passing SB 80 and HB 2186, Oregon will lead the nation with innovations that create green jobs in energy efficiency, save businesses and homeowners money on energy and fuel bills, and continue to bring more wind, solar and other renewable energy onto the grid.

Take Action to Pass the LNG Public Protection Act!

Day of Action

Sierra Club Activists Taking Action Against LNG!

Oregon is currently threatened by three proposed Liquefied Natural Gas terminals and hundreds of miles of pipelines that would cut across farms, forests, rivers and public lands. The LNG Public Protection Act would safeguard Oregon’s communities and natural resources during the process of permitting Liquefied Natural Gas facilities. The LNG Public Protection Act is not a ban on LNG; it would clarify and strengthen the existing authority of the state without challenging federal oversight of this process.

Imported from places like Russia and the Middle East, liquefied natural gas emits 20-30% more global warming pollution than domestic sources of natural gas. At a time when Oregon and the nation are grappling with how to reduce our dependence on foreign fossil fuels obtained in hostile or unstable regions of the world, it makes no sense to build LNG import terminals in our state and deepen our dependence on another yet another foreign fossil fuel.

Take Action to Protect Oregon’s Ancient Forests and Clean Water!

Kelsey Whisky Forest

Kelsey Whisky Forest

Protections for Oregon’s old growth forests were stripped away by the Bush administration during its last 18 months in office. On 2.6 million acres managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in western Oregon, currently protected old growth forests and salmon bearing streams and creeks are targeted for new clearcutting and logging roads. Its time to raise your voice for Oregon’s last ancient forests.
