Oregon Chapter Volunteers, Pueblo Mountain
At work and at rest - Paula Surman

The Sierra Club High Desert Committee traditionally hosts a variety of trips which include backpacks and basecamps, gorgeous day hikes, inspiring service projects, enlightening archeological, ecological, and historical tours and lots of desert adventure. We sponsor a variety of trips partly because we enjoy visiting the desert, but we are also trying to expose new people to the wonders of the Great Basin and develop advocates who will help protect desert wildlands for the future.

And, if there is a choice
Of a place to spend
Uncountable years to come,
I wish to be left to the desert's peace
And the warmth of the desert's sun

For I know the soul
That I once possessed
Turned loose on a sagebrush sea,
Would hug spooky knees to a spectral chest
In ghostly ecstasy."

This two-day exploration will be based in Mitchell, Wheeler County. Three Forks Owyhee River
June 18-22, 2008

The Owyhee lands are vast and diverse.  They contain many WSA (Wilderness Study Areas) most of which the High Desert Committee has visited. We are now going to revisit areas and to develop a plan to establish priorities for our conservation activities as we seek greater protection for selected wilderness areas.

Areas to be visited may include the Owyhee Canyon, Upper Leslie Gulch, Jordan Craters, Upper Little Owyhee, Lower Owyhee Canyon, Three Forks Crossing and more.  We have set aside the time between June 18th and June 22nd for our activities.  Our plan is to develop a schedule that you could join us for all or part of the time.  A more detailed agenda will be developed in early 2008.  Let us know your interest as we have specific activities and dates to consider.
Please join us for an exploring adventure in the high desert of Oregon!

Steens Mountain: Fence Pull / Service Trip
July 25-30, 2008

Want to help add a bit more “wild” to Oregon’s newest wilderness? Join us in removing the visual blight of redundant fencing that’s also a danger to hikers and wildlife. Trip participants will backpack in to a base camp. There we will pull and roll barbed wire fence. We will also have downtime to explore the area. The work is strenuous and the climate hot, but you’ll walk away with a feeling of accomplishment!

StoneHouse: Activist / Grazing Monitoring
Aug. 30-Sept. 1, 2008

Join us to explore this little visited WSA on the north end of Steens. In addition to visiting the escarpment for some great views, we will continue monitoring grazing practices in the adjoining allotment for a third year. This would be a good opportunity to witness the effects of grazing on the landscape along with BLM/rancher efforts to improve management.
