Welcome to the Columbia Group Outings Web Page!

The Columbia Group of the Sierra Club includes all of northwest Oregon from Astoria to The Dalles and south to McMinnville and Tillamook. The Group office is located in Portland, OR. Outings are offered in northwest Oregon and southwest Washington.

Outings Information

You don't have to be a member to participate!

Arrive with adequate food, water and clothing. If in doubt about your ability to complete a hike, please consult with the leader before the trip.

Field guides, snacks to share and humor are welcome.

Please leave your pet at home unless otherwise specified or with prior approval from the leader. Entertainment devices such as radio and "walkman" are discouraged. Firearms are prohibited.

Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Most day trips require no advance reservations unless "reservations required" or "group size limited" is indicated.

Participants are asked to contribute a suggested donation of $1 for members and $2 for nonmembers. This fee helps cover costs incurred by the Club for the outings program.

Carpooling is encouraged. Riders traditionally share expenses with drivers depending on vehicle and number of riders. A suggested amount is 10 cents per mile per person.

All participants on Sierra Club outings are required to sign a standard liability waiver.

May 10 Songs in the Gorge: Indian Point (8 miles; 2,600' gain; 2,700' peak altitude)
Leisurely-paced hike to whet the appetite, with music to follow. Bring an instrument and/or a song; I'll bring a guitar. Trees in places are several hundred years old, six feet in diameter; there will be meadows filled with wildflower abloom; and there are tremendous views up and down the gorge. Meet at 7:00 AM, back around 5:00 PM (Sunrise: 5:45 AM Sunset: 8:29 PM)

May 10-11 (2 day) (Saturday-Sunday) Mother’s Day annual Mt. St. Helen’s climb.
14 miles R/T, 6000 ft elevation gain Somewhat Strenuous Down your favorite dress and join hundreds of others in the traditional hike up Mt. Saint Helens to celebrate Mother's Day. Every year, over 300 men and women climb this hill in all forms of elegance. Join the fun and creativity. Leave Saturday Morning 9:00 AM. Max. 12 This trip requires skis (cross country or back country), skins, (or snowshoes), the ability to backpack 15 miles/day and, most importantly, an elegant dress! Reservations need to be made by Thursday, May 8th. Fee: $15

May 15th-19 (Wednesday evening through Monday evening) Full Moon Backcountry Snow Camping Weekend Wallowa, Strenuous. 40 miles and 10,500 ft el. Gain
Starting from Wallowa Lake, we head into the mountains of the Wallowa for 5 days of adventure into pristine back country wilderness. Superb vistas and great snow. Exploratory trip Requires experience snow camping, back country skis and skins, ability to backpack 15 miles/day, references. Reservations need to be made at least a week in advance. Fee: $15

May 15th-19 (leaving Wed. evening May 14th returning Monday evening the 19th) Full Moon Backcountry Snow Camping Weekend MPtarmigan Traverse, Strenuous. 25 miles and 7500 ft el. gain
The legendary Ptarmigan Traverse begins at Cascade Pass in the shadow of North Cascades National Park's 8,065-foot (2,458-meter) Johannesburg Mountain and traces nearly 25 miles (40 kilometers) of the Cascades Crest, cutting across ridges and cirques to the north side of 10,541-foot (321-meter) Glacier Peak, in the Glacier Peak Wilderness Area. The off-piste skiing and climbing along the traverse are both challenging, but the payoffs are unrivaled: bombing down 3,000-foot (914-meter) corn-choked couloirs while supreme views of frozen lakes and tumbling glaciers spread out before you. "The trip is equivalent to the Haute Route in the Alps, but in a wilderness setting," Requires experience snow camping, back country skis and skins, ability to backpack 15 miles/day, references. Reservations need to be made at least two weeks in advance. Fee: $15 Max. 12

May 18 (Sun) Saddle Mountain Difficult/6 miles/1600ft gain
The steep path to the summit of this Coast Range mountain ascends wildflower meadows to a panoramic view of the coast, the Columbia River and the Cascades. Reservations required. May 24 Aging the Human Footprint, in the pines near Badger Creek Wilderness: Fifteen Mile Creek (10.2 miles; 1,600' gain; 4,600' peak altitude)
Who preceded us on the trail today, this week, this year, recent years, and not-so-recent years? Humans have left traces here for 13,000 years, directly and indirectly. From tracker Tom Brown to paleontologist Paul Martin, we'll explore and discuss them all during a leisurely-paced hike. Diverse east-side forest with ten species of conifers, with fragrant ponderosa pines to 5' thick; good views into the high desert; and a creek-side lunch stop. Meet at 7:00 AM, back around 7:00 PM (Sunrise: 5:30 AM Sunset: 8:45 PM) Reservations required; limit 12 people.

May 24 (Sat) Hamilton Mountain Moderate/7.6mi/2000ft
A wonderful wildflower hike through coniferous forests with open steep meadows and cliff-side hanging gardens. Views of the Gorge and waterfalls add to the charm of the area. A relaxed pace will allow for maximum enjoyment of the flowers and views.

June 7 Songs in the Wilderness, near the Salmon Huckleberry Wilderness: Rock Lakes (14 miles; 3,000' gain; 4,950' peak altitude)
Leisurely-paced hike to whet the appetite, with music to follow. Bring an instrument and/or a song; I'll bring a guitar. Ten species of conifers, great wildflower meadows, glacial lakes, and lots of signs of wildlife. Meet at 7:00 AM, back around 8:00 PM (Sunrise: 5:22 AM Sunset: 8:57 PM) Reservations required; limit 12 people.

June 14 (Sat); Aging the Human Footprint, along the Lewis River: Lewis River Falls (7 miles; 500' gain; 1,800' peak altitude)

From tracker Tom Brown to paleontologist Paul Martin, we'll explore and discuss them all during a leisurely-paced hike.Easy walk along the Lewis River, with incredible Douglas-firs and red-cedars to 10' in diameter. The waterfalls are beautiful and massive. Meet at 8:00 AM, back around 6:00 PM (Sunrise: 5:21 AM Sunset: 9:01 PM) Reservations required; limit 12 people.

Outings Meeting Places

Gateway Park and Ride is located off of I-84 (Exit 7 eastbound from Portland) at 1321 NE 99th Ave (between Multnomah and Pacific, behind the Gateway Fred Meyer). We meet on the sidewalk on the south side of the parking garage.

Beaverton-El Monica Station Max Park and Ride is at SW 170th and Baseline Rd. (Off of Hwy 26, take the Cornell Rd. exit, immediately turn left onto 158th, proceed to Baseline Rd., take a right to 170th where the lot is on the right.) Meet at the rear of the parking lot, away from the tracks.

More Outings Opportunities

High Desert Committee Outings

The Audubon Society of Portland
Join the local Audubon Society for "wild in the city" and explore Portland's green spaces by kayak, bike, and foot. These outings are a great way to learn about Portland wildlife.

Klickitat Trail Conservancy
Hiking and biking trips the first Saturday and third Sunday of each month. The trial follows the old rail corridor that starts in Lyle, Washington, and continues 31 miles north into Swale Canyon.

Friends of the Columbia River Gorge Spring hikes
One of the best hiking groups around. Learn about Gorge trails, geography and wildflowers. There are hikes from March 17 to June 17

Bark
Bark is a non-profit grassroots forest protection group working to preserve the forests, waters, and wildlife of Mt. Hood. On the second Sunday of every month Bark leads hikes to visit threatened areas of Mt. Hood National Forest and surrounding lands. Carpools leave from the Daily Grind (SE 41st & Hawthorne) at 9:30 am sharp.

Mazamas
Mazamas sponsors hundreds of hikes each year in Northwest Oregon and Southwest Washington. These include moderate hikes, strenuous conditioning hikes, trail tending (work trips), backpacks, snow bivouacs, beach hikes, snowshoe clinics, street rambles and short family oriented walks around Portland. The Mazamas tend to hike at a faster pace than other hiking groups.

Native Plant Society of Oregon
The Native Plant Society offers free wildflower hikes. Nonmembers and beginners welcome. Learn plant ID, plant lore, and great places to see flowers.

Oregon Nordic Club
The Portland Chapter of the Oregon Nordic Club is dedicated to promoting greater participation in and understanding of the value of outdoor recreation with an emphasis on Nordic skiing.

Trails Club of Oregon
Hiking and biking group of Oregon. Non members are welcome.
