This list describes what we do. Please list any activities that are of interest to you.

  1. CONSERVATION-Conservation is at the heart of the Sierra Club. Our group works to preserve local national forests and BLM high desert lands, to protect the quality of our air, to protect our trout streams and the Deschutes River, and to encourage smart growth. We also track state and national conservation priorities. We meet to identify and prioritize conservation issues and to develop strategies for success. Your help is greatly appreciated in the following areas:
    1. Attend monthly ExCOM meetings to discuss strategy and tactics for local environmental issues
    2. Write articles for the newsletter on local issues
    3. Track specific local conservation issues
  2. OUTINGS-We organize local hikes to many of Central Oregons beautiful natural areas throughout the spring, summer, and fall seasons. Participating or leading local outing helps members get to know each other and increase their involvement in other local Club activities. Your help is needed to:
    1. Organize and lead local outings
    2. Support outings by asking your friends to come along even if they are not official members of the Sierra Club
  3. POLITICAL-We work to elect environmentally sound government representatives and maintain ongoing dialogs with politicians. One way to do this is by making Sierra Club candidate endorsements. We also participate in election campaigns at volunteer nights. Your help is needed to:
    1. Meet with local and state political leaders
    2. Participate in the Sierra Club endorsement process, whereby the Club endorses candidates with strong environmental records
    3. Work on an endorsed political campaign
    4. Participate in Lobby Day during Oregon's legislative session (held in Salem)
  4. NEWSLETTER-We prepare and distribute the Wild Juniper Journal, which is sent out each quarter to our approximately 1200 members. The editor organizes and lays out the newsletter, with some assistance from the editorial board. Volunteers are needed to help:
    1. Contribute articles
    2. Solicit newsletter sponsors and advertisers
  5. EXCOM-The Executive Committee, or ExCom, is the leadership of the Juniper Group. Elected by the group membership, the ExCom makes official group policy and coordinates all programs and activities. The ExCom meets about 12 times per year and meetings are open to all members. They are a good way to learn about and guide the environmental priorities and daily activities of the group. Would you be interested in:
    1. Helping us establish environmental priorities by running for office to serve on the ExCom
    2. Serving as a special issues chairperson, focusing on forest protection, a water issue, or some very focused topic
